Department Of English

About the Department

Midnapore College was once a centre of learning English in the whole district of undivided Midnapore during and after the British regime. English was introduced as a Compulsory Language subject in the F.A. Course since the establishment of the College in 1873. When the College was raised to the status of a First Grade College in 1922, English remained as a compulsory subject in I.A. and I.Sc Courses. From the session 1940-1941 when Principal B.D Banerjee was able to obtain affiliation in B.A General Course, English (Pass/ General) was introduced as a general subject for all Undergraduate students. Apart from usual classes, tutorial classes were also held. The students of Honours Course, numbering a few, were too much benefitted by their mentoring, imparting lessons, teaching language construction and further clarification of texts taught in the usual classes.
