About the Department

Bengali was introduced as a general subject from the session 1940 – 1941. Midnapore College was once a centre of excellent learning in the whole district of undivided Midnapore during and after the British regime. Dr. Manomohan Dutta. D.Lit, Dr. Bishnu Basu, eminent playwright, Dr. Animesh Kanti Pal writer and Asoke Bhattacharya (Beetasoke Bhattacharya) renowned poet, critic and scholar had laid a solid foundation of teaching Bengali language & literature in Midnapore College. Honours affiliation in Bengali was granted by Calcutta University in 1963 and morning section was opened in 1967. At present there are Eight full time teachers in the department. Since 2013 P.G department is running with quality teaching.
